Gunned down by two men in the porch of St. Patrick’s Church in Bandon, County Cork, as he entered to attend Sunday morning Mass.
Constable Mulherin was the Chief Intelligence Officer for the Royal Irish Constabulary in the West Cork region. The accuracy of the information he received from his contacts was having a demoralising effect on local terrorists, following a number of raids and arrests of their men. Having already survived an attempt on his life in March and realising his life was in danger, he took every precaution to ensure his safety but, nevertheless, he was killed entering church.
