Killed when he slipped under the wheels of a lorry while cycling to report for duty at Hammersmith police station.
After overtaking a slow-moving heavy steam-lorry on King Street, Hammersmith, PC Baseby’s bicycle slipped on the wet and greasy road throwing him into the path of the lorry. Unable to stop in time the lorry’s wheels passed over the officer, causing him severe internal crush injuries.
He was immediately taken to West London Hospital but declared dead on arrival at 12:40pm.
William, who served with ‘T’ Division, left a wife and three children.
