Died from injuries sustained when he was shot on 20 January when the mobile patrol he was part of was ambushed by a large IRA unit.

Died from the wounds he sustained eleven days earlier, when his mobile patrol was ambushed by a large terrorist unit at Glenwood House, between Sixmilebridge and Broadford, County Clare. Four officers died during the attack and another died on 25th January.
