Died in the Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary from a fractured skull after falling from his bicycle two days earlier.
PC Hayward left Newent police station about 10:00am on Saturday to cycle to Gorsley and district, calling at Pound Farm between 1:00pm and 2:00pm but, approximately two hours later, he was found lying unconscious in the road near Oxenhall, having sustained a fractured skull in a fall from his bicycle.
Walter was transported by police car to Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary but died there on Monday afternoon.
He had transferred from Gloucester to Newent just three weeks earlier and had been married only three months.
