Killed when an RIC patrol was ambushed by terrorists, near Glenbower, County Tipperary, while responding to an earlier ambush.
Earlier in the day, about 2:45pm, a combined police and military cycle patrol had been ambushed at Ninemilehouse, County Kilkenny.
In response to this a further military patrol was despatched from Callan and this patrol was ambushed about 4:15pm on the Clonmel Road just two miles from Callan.
Meanwhile an RIC patrol had been despatched from Clonmel, County Tipperary, and this patrol was also ambushed, near Glenbower, where Sergeant Walsh was killed and another RIC Sergeant was wounded.
