Circumstances

Fatally wounded whilst on patrol in an IRA bomb and gun attack.

Died in the Central Military Hospital, seventeen days after being fatally wounded, together with Constable Francis C. Shortall, who died on 7th January, when their ten-man patrol was involved in a terrorist bomb and gun attack as it crossed Parnell Bridge in the city of Cork. The eight remaining officers were all wounded.
