Fatally shot with an RIC Sergeant when IRA gunmen attacked a patrol.

Fatally shot, together with RIC Sergeant Frederick J. Frizelle and USC Special Constable Edward D. Hegarty, both of whom died the following day, when terrorist gunmen attacked their patrol as it returned from Ballyronan, near Magherafelt, County Londonderry.
