Fatally wounded, alongside six other officers, when their patrol was ambushed by terrorists at Carrowkennedy, County Kerry.

Fatally wounded, alongside six other officers, five of whom died two days earlier and one died the previous day when, about 7:00pm, their patrol of twenty men, returning from Bundorragha to Westport, was ambushed by between 70 and 100 terrorists, at Carrowkennedy, County Kerry. The battle raged for about three-and-a-half hours.
