Circumstances

Thomas Cooke, 52-year-old Protestant, married with 3 children and an RUC police officer holding the rank of Sergeant was from Silverbrook Park, Newbuildings in Londonderry. Sgt. Cook was off duty at 11:20PM and was at the Prehen golf Club with some friends. As he was leaving and getting into his car he was approached by 2 IRA gunmen. The gunmen opened fire on him from close range hitting him with 10 bullets. He was rushed to Londonderry's Altnagelvin Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
