Fatally injured, alongside Inspector John Brian Martin, when a terrorist time-bomb, hidden in the ceiling of a classroom at Ulster Polytechnic, Jordanstown, County Antrim, exploded during a lecture.

Sergeant William Robert McDonald, died from his injuries eight days later.
