Died the day after being fatally injured by a terrorist booby-trap bomb that exploded as he and his colleague were checking an abandoned stolen car.

The explosion, at Lissaraw, near Crossmaglen, County Antrim, also fatally wounded his colleague, Constable Robert Millar, and he, too, died on this day.

Samuel’s brother, Chief Inspector Alexander Donaldson, was killed alongside eight other officers when, on 28th February 1985, Newry RUC Station came under heavy mortar attack by terrorists.
