Circumstances

Having left Kevin Street Police Barracks on mounted patrol his colleagues horse became lame. Upon his colleague dismounting and removing a stone from the horse's hoof the animal bolted. Brereton, who had remained mounted, gave chase. He was later found lying on the road near Dolphin's Barn by a resident. He was taken to Meath Hospital but died the following morning.

His colleague dismounted and was removing a stone from the horse’s hoof when the animal bolted. Robert, who had remained mounted, gave chase but was later thrown from his horse and fatally injured.

He was found lying on the road near Dolphin’s Barn, near Dublin, and died in hospital the following morning.
