Shot and thrown into the River Shannon to drown after being abducted when terrorists ambushed a military lorry at Scramogue, near Strokestown, County Roscommon.
Along with his RIC colleague, Constable James Evans, he was found in civilian clothes in the lorry while under arrest and facing court martial, Constable Buchanan for robbing a store in Ruskey and Constable Evans for breaking a stained glass window in Elphin Church.
