Died after being crushed when his police boat was struck by another vessel and rammed against a steam-tug.
About 6:15pm, Sub-Inspector Pickering was on duty on the River Tyne, with his son-in-law, also a police officer, when their police boat was accidentally struck by another vessel and rammed against the paddle box of a steam-tug, near the Mill Dam, South Shields.
Richard, who died at the scene, had served more than twenty-seven years with the force.
His son-in-law survived the incident.
