Died of infection while in hospital following the amputation of his leg which he broke while helping to extinguish a fire.

PC Skirving was helping to extinguish a fire among the gorse bushes on Calton Hill when he fell and broke his leg. He was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where, a week later, his leg had to be amputated. Infection set in and he died a few days later.
