Circumstances

Despite personal visits and written warnings to lay off Republicans Smyth continued to pursue them. On the evening of 30 July he was Walking to his home in Drumcondra when he was shot by 5 IRA gunmen, he escaped into his home where he was helped by his sons. He was taken to Mater Misericordiae Hospital where he remained until his death.

Died in Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, nearly six weeks after being shot by five gunmen as he walked to his home in Millmount Avenue, Drumcondra, between 10:30pm and 11:30pm on the evening of 30th July. He had previously received personal visits and written warnings to “lay off” Republicans, but had continued to pursue them.
