Shot and fatally wounded when he pursued terrorist gunmen into a house in Belfast. Posthumously awarded the King’s Police and Fire Services Medal for Gallantry.
Constable Murphy was in a patrol car with three other officers when it was fired on by six terrorists at Kashmir Street.
The police pursued the gunmen to 53 Cawnpore Street where Constable Murphy entered the house and wounded one of the gunmen.
Constable Murphy was shot at and struck 5 times in the chest, he died from his injuries.
Patrick was married with nine children.
He was posthumously awarded the King’s Police & Fire Services Medal for Gallantry. His wife was presented with the medal by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Stormont.
