After stopping a group of men removing crops and livestock he and other police officers were fired upon. He died at the scene.

Shot and killed when he and other officers were fired on after stopping a group of armed men from removing crops and livestock. His colleague, Sub-Constable James Gleeson, died from his wounds eight days later.
