Circumstances

He was part of a three man RIC party based at Innishannon, who were ambushed while on patrol at Ballinspittal, a village mid-way between Kinsale and Bandon, by members of the IRA. He was shot and killed outright.

His colleague, Sergeant Cornelius Crean, was also killed in the ambush at Upton Industrial School in Ballinspittal, a village mid-way between Kinsale and Bandon, County Cork.
