While patrolling the Upper Chorlton Road in the Old Trafford Division with a colleague, they saw a man enter a garden and, believing him to be a burglar, they separated to find the suspect. Constable Cook located and took hold of the man who then fired two shots from a revolver, one of which struck the officer. He was rushed to a local surgery but died shortly after.
