Fatally injured by a bomb planted at an address he was called to.

Constable Dawson was called to 139 University Street, Belfast regarding a suspect hold-all found in the front garden. Previously, in 1983, a man was injured whilst carrying a bomb to the same house which prematurely detonated.

Whilst the officer spoke to the householder the hold-all detonated killing her. Constable Dawson was taken to Belfast City Hospital but died shortly after from his wounds from the explosion.

Constable Dawson was married.
