Died from suffocation due to severe congestion of the lungs after becoming unwell while on foot patrol in Cheltenham.
On the evening of 5th February 1874, PC Selby left Cheltenham police station about 9:45pm to undertake his foot patrol in the Park Gate area of the town.
It was an exceptionally foggy night and while proceeding towards Shurdington the officer, who had been suffering from a cold, became unwell and accepted a lift on a wagon being driven by two brothers.
On arrival at the New Inn, the brothers spoke to Maurice but received no reply and on being lifted from the wagon he was found to have died, through his cold being aggravated by the dense fog.
A verdict of death due to natural causes was returned.
