Died in hospital after being found unconscious on his beat, suffering from concussion due to unknown circumstances.

At 4:00am, on the morning of 19th February  1873, a fellow police constable found PC Maguire lying unconscious on the footpath on Great Howard Street, Liverpool.

He was taken to Rose Hill Bridewell police station where he was placed in a cell after being considered to have fallen as a result of being drunk.

Shortly before noon, however, medical aid was requested and it was established that he was not drunk but unconscious and he was taken to the Royal Infirmary where it was discovered he was suffering from concussion of the brain, probably caused by violence as there were several bruises on his head and indentations on his face and neck.

Despite every effort to save him, Mathias died at 3:30pm that same day.

He had joined the force about eighteen months earlier having left his home in County Cavan, Ireland.
