Circumstances

Having retired as a Sergeant in 1910 he rejoined and with other officers was attacked and fatally wounded in Midleton, Co. Cork on the 23rd December 1920 dying of his wounds on the 29th December 1920.

Special Constable Mullen had re-joined the Constabulary after having retired as a Sergeant in 1910.

Constables Arthur W. Thorp and Ernest Cecil Dray were both fatally wounded in the original attack and died from their wounds on 30th and 31st December, respectively.
