Found shot dead with a humane killer in his office at Horley Police Station.
A humane killer that was normally kept in the safe was near his body.
The inquest held at Reigate recorded an open verdict, noting a wound in his forehead consistent with a bullet being fire from the humane killer.
Inspector Chapman was due to retire the following year after thirty years service and was to take up a post at Gatwick Airport.
He was survived by his wife and their two daughters.
