While serving with the British Police Unit in Cyprus, he was guarding a prisoner in Nicosia Hospital when terrorist gunmen opened fire, although mortally wounded he returned fire, saving a colleague's life, before he died.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.
