Shot in the head and killed while off duty with a colleague when they were ambushed by terrorists on Mallow Street, Limerick, after visiting the doctor.
A month later, on 22nd June, his colleague, Sergeant Patrick Hearty, died from health issues attributable to having been shot during the ambush.
