Killed during a gun battle with terrorists when his patrol of eighteen RIC officers, commanded by a District Inspector, was ambushed at Skirdagh, four miles north-east of Newport, County Mayo.

The terrorists were entrenched in a strong position and were only routed when a large military force arrived.
