Killed during a gun battle between a police patrol and a large IRA unit.

Killed during a gun battle when a patrol of 18 RIC officers under a District Inspector, was ambushed by terrorists at Skirdagh, four miles north-east of Newport, County Mayo. The terrorists were entrenched in a strong position and were only routed when a large military force arrived.
