Fatally wounded while on patrol when he was shot in the neck and beaten by two poachers.
Fatally wounded while on patrol in the late evening when he was shot in the neck at close range and then beaten by two poachers as he approached Folly Crossroads near Hungerford, where he had planned to meet one of his Constables, PC Thomas Shorter, who was also bludgeoned to death.
