Circumstances

Patrolling late in the evening to meet up with his Constables he first planned to meet up with Constable Thomas Shorter. As he approached the Folly Crossroads near Hungerford he was to rendezvous with Constable Shorter, he was shot in the neck at close range then beaten by two poachers.

Fatally wounded while on patrol in the late evening when he was shot in the neck at close range and then beaten by two poachers as he approached Folly Crossroads near Hungerford, where he had planned to meet one of his Constables, PC Thomas Shorter, who was also bludgeoned to death.
