Killed while helping to salvage a shipwreck on the Isle of Man when its cargo of gunpowder exploded.
PC Wright, Chief Constable John Craige and twenty-seven other men, were attempting to salvage the wreck of the Brig “Lily” on the rocks at Kitterland, in the Sound Channel, Isle of Man, when its cargo of sixty-one tons of gunpowder exploded, killing all but one of the men involved.
The sole survivor suffered severe injuries.
