Died in hospital after being fatally injured when he was struck by a tramcar while on patrol near Nelson Square.
PC Welch died in the North Staffordshire Infirmary, between 11:00pm and midnight, after sustaining a fractured skull and other injuries when, just a few hours earlier, he was struck and knocked down by a tramcar while on patrol near Nelson Square.
John had served nearly seventeen-and-a-half years with the force, having joined on 26th August 1897, and had an exemplary record.
In his younger days he served two years with the Voluntary Artillery.
He left a wife and an adult daughter.
