Accidentally drowned while returning to his station in foggy weather after serving a summons.
On the evening of Tuesday 28th December 1858, PC Smith, who was stationed in Great Wakering, travelled to Foulness to serve a summons for a case of assault.
The following morning his body was found on the sands between Foulness and Great Wakering and it was surmised that on his return journey he had lost his way in the fog and drowned.
