While supervising a fire escape being fixed in Duke Street, and on testing the ladder while at the top the structure overbalanced throwing him to his death.

While supervising and testing the repair to a fire escape at Duke Street Police Station, Sergeant Poole was thrown from the top of a ladder when it overbalanced, causing him serious injuries from which he later died.
