Died the day after suffering decompression sickness while helping a colleague who had got into difficulties while diving with the MPS Sub-Aqua Club.

Circumstances

Whilst he was diving with the Metropolitan Police Sub-Aqua Club off the Sussex coast, a colleague got into difficulties; Sergeant Gilbert, an experienced diver, remained with him, sharing his air and assisting him to the surface but as a result John himself suffered decompression sickness and died the following day.

The previous day, DS Gilbert had remained with, shared his air with and assisted to the surface, a colleague who had got into difficulties while diving off the Sussex coast with the Metropolitan Police Sub-Aqua Club.

John was an experienced diver and was posthumously awarded an ‘In Memoriam Testimonial’ by the Royal Humane Society.
