Died from the multiple injuries he sustained when he was struck by a railway wagon in the goods yard at York.
On the 3rd January 1951, PC Kildale was working alone in the railway shunting yard in York while loose wagons were being pushed and diverted into lines to form trains.
John was last seen examining wagons but, soon after, he was found lying across the tracks with injuries suggesting that he had been struck by a wagon.
He died on arrival at hospital. The cause of death was given as haemorrhage and shock due to severe multiple injuries.
