Died after being shot in the chest while on foot patrol with a colleague near Bishop's Gate, Derry.

Constable Flaherty and a colleague were on foot patrol when, outside Mullan’s Public House near Bishop’s Gate, Derry, he was shot in the chest and fatally wounded.

John was declared dead on arrival at the City Infirmary .
