Died in hospital the morning after being fatally shot, while off duty, when he and a colleague were attacked by terrorists.

On the evening of Sunday 3rd of July, Constable Fitzgerald and another Constable, who managed to escape, were attacked by five armed men on bicycles, while off duty at The Murrough, about a mile from Wicklow, County Wicklow.
