Fatally wounded by the explosion of a bomb thrown at his patrol by terrorists in Warrenpoint, County Down.

Constable Cummings died from an internal haemorrhage in Aghnamoira, County Down, the day after being fatally wounded by shrapnel when, on a very dark night, a bomb was thrown at his  patrol as it walked along Seaview Road in Warrenpoint.

Two other Constables were seriously wounded by the explosion.

John was survived by his wife and his parents.
