Killed while trying to rescue a colleague when a wall collapsed as they were fighting a warehouse fire that ran out of control.

While fighting a warehouse fire on Juniper Street, and after becoming aware that a wall was about to collapse, Police Fireman John Beer and his colleague and best friend, Police Fireman Charles John Watts, attempted to escape the danger, but Charles stumbled and fell. As John attempted to rescue him the wall collapsed on to them and both men were killed.

John, who joined the force on 7th June 1887, left a widow and two children.

Both officers are buried at Smithdown Cemetery (now known as Toxteth Park Cemetery).
