Killed alongside his District Inspector when their patrol was ambushed near Granard, County Longford.

Killed alongside District Inspector Francis Worthington Craven when their patrol of two vehicles and seventeen men was ambushed at Ballinlee, near Granard, County Longford. Temporary Cadets George Bush and Harold Clayton both died two days later as a result of the same incident.
