Circumstances

Fatally wounded during an IRA ambush on the eight-man RIC mobile patrol he was part of.

Killed alongside two colleagues, Constables Charles William Buntrock and Patrick Mackessy, when a terrorist unit ambushed their seven-man mobile patrol at Inches Cross, Lisvernane, in the Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary. Constable John Thomas Miller died the following day.
