While regulating traffic late at night at the end of the Barnet Fair, he saw a heavy lorry run out of control towards a crowd and, in endeavouring to clear them from its path, he was struck by the lorry and fatally injured.

Posthumously awarded the King's Police Medal for Gallantry.
