Shot dead alongside a colleague when their four-man patrol was ambushed near their barracks in Milltown, County Galway.
Shot dead alongside his colleague, Constable Edgar Ernest Day, when their four-man patrol was ambushed just 150 yards from their barracks in Milltown, County Galway, as they returned along the main road from the village of Banagher.
Another officer was seriously wounded while the fourth escaped back to the barracks.
