Shot and killed while walking his dog in the early hours of the morning, when terrorist gunmen opened fire from a wooded area opposite his home in Bryansford Road, Newcastle, County Down.
 
He joined the RUC in 1950 and had been assigned to Dundrum in County Down before being transferred to Belfast. He was later promoted to Inspector in Downpatrick, his hometown.
