Killed alongside twelve of his Sub-Constables when a crowd of five hundred people, opposing the tithes, assembled and followed the police demanding the server of the tithe processes be handed over to them. The confrontation eventually turned nasty and in a boreen, at Carrickshock Commons in South Kilkenny, a hail of stones rained down on the officers causing them fatal injuries.
