Circumstances

In the winter of 1941-42, during the German occupation of Guernsey, PC Smith was one of 16 police officers deported to prisons and labour camps in Europe for stealing food from the occupying army to help prevent civilians from going hungry. Having been beaten and deprived of food and clothes when it was terribly cold the officer died in captivity.
