Circumstances

Having travelled to Dundalk with a colleague to discuss a possible joint RUC/Garda operation they they were on their way home on the Edenappa Road near Jonesborough, Co. Armagh. Just a few hundred yards over the border they were ambushed and fatally shot.

Chief Superintendent Breen was shot dead alongside his colleague, Superintendent Robert James Buchanan, as they drove home from a meeting in Dundalk, to discuss a possible joint RUC/Garda operation, when they were ambushed by terrorists, on the Edenappa Road near Jonesborough, County Armagh, just a few hundred yards over the border.
