On night patrol in Stapleford Abbots area on the road towards Ongar he had cause to stop two men in a motor car. PC Gutteridge was not aware the men had earlier stolen the car, whilst speaking to the driver the passenger shot PC Gutteridge at close range in the head. Killing him they fled.

Killed while on night patrol on the Ongar Road between Stapleford Abbots and Romford when, as he spoke to the driver of a car he had cause to stop, the passenger, without warning, shot him in the head at close range. PC Gutteridge was not aware that the men, who then fled the scene, had earlier stolen the car.
