Shot dead by an IRA gang while he was escorting a land steward.

Shot dead by a terrorist unit, soon after 10:00pm, while on duty in plain clothes, in the Hibernian Hotel, Rathkeale, County Limerick, as he and another officer were escorting a land steward from County Kerry. The second officer was wounded but survived the incident.
